Stephanie Randall, the academic advisor for Orchard View Elementary School’s 21st Century Community Learning program, observed the students as they implemented deep breathing and positive thinking strategies. Students participated in activities designed to increase strategies for relaxation which included utilizing art and humor to cope with stress. Children learned about and shared resources to empower each other. With books such as Who Moved My Cheese? for Kids by Spencer Johnson and Perfectly Messed Up Story by Patrick McDonnell, children were able to read and discuss their thoughts about life challenges. We pivoted to provide experiences that built resiliency in youth across Palm Beach County by creating Brain Food Literacy Kits for food distribution lines and Bounce Back virtual lessons that focused on staying calm, building emotional strength and spreading kindness. During 2020-2021, when in-person collaborative teamwork was side-lined, social-emotional learning through literacy continued. In a typical year, Read! Lead! Succeed! builds reading and social-emotional skills in youth as they research and address social issues with youth-driven, collaborative projects. Youth learned how to use humor to manage stress. Students enjoyed using slap happy wristbands as they read funny stories and told jokes. Community Impactĥ5 out-of-school time programs participated Summer 2020, we expanded our reach by providing local food distribution lines with 900 at-home literacy kits filled with books, hands-on activity supplies and step-by-step instructions for families to enjoy a break from the prevalent onscreen experience. Through virtual visits and literacy supply kits, we taught youth while modeling literacy instruction practices for teachers, camp counselors and afterschool staff. Read! Lead! Succeed! offers a social emotional learning curriculum, using high-quality children’s literature and literature-based activities. Read! Lead! #Read to me program registration#
Registration for Summer Reading begins June 1. We believe reading is its own reward, but to add a little more motivation, kids who complete their reading folder before August 13 will receive a reward packet that includes a book, coupons, and small prizes.(Reward Prizes will not be available until after July 15) They can also complete some fun learning activities. Kids record books they are reading or books being read to them in a printed or online log.
